I'm sure may of you avid sports fan have been debating in this heated argument of who is the best footballer on the planet of the 21st century, excluding great legends like Pele, Maradona, Beckenbauer and even Gerd Muller. Some of you picked Messi, some of you chose Ronaldo and well, other England-crazy fans chose the Shrek-look-a-like, Wayne Rooney.
Needless to say, both Messi and Ronaldo have been in contention for the Ballon D'or award for several times now...except Messi has won 3 of them, while Ronaldo only has 1.
Jokes aside, Ronaldo is one of the world's most expensive players and has way better speed, and shooting power as compared to Messi. He isn't as short as Messi, and well...didn't lose to Chelsea in the Champions League.
Messi is often compared to his compatriot, Diego Maradona, who is infamously known for single-handedly helping his country win the world cup 1986 with a half-court effort by dribbling past 5 to 6 england players and beating the goalkeeper as well...on his own. He's also known for his 'Hand of God', in which he used his hand to score a disallowed goal unseen by the referees. To keep a long story short, Messi has a more team-based style of play, and is a playmaker himself, even though he's a striker, making him one of the best in the world. He is known for his efficiency in getting past defenders without even doing much skills and also to have incredible vision in passing. Ronaldo has a more individualistic style of play, relying on fancy footwork, pace and power to get pass defenders. Ronaldo's heading prowess is also notable as he is known to jump very athletically, and is extremely good at taking free kicks due to his dip shots and knuckle balls being able to efficiently fool both the goalkeepers and defenders.
Below are some clips: one is a comparison of Messi's goal to Maradona's goal, the other two are montages of Messi and Ronaldo respectively.
So who's the best? Your choice.
